Read , Write Inc and Phonics.
In Reception Class and KS1 (Infants) , as well as in Year Two and above to a lesser extent, we teach early reading skills by incorporating a synthetic phonics scheme of work into the curriculum.
At Norton Road Primary we have chosen to use the scheme called ‘Read, Write Inc ’ as this is highly recommended and was written mainly by a former Head teacher whose school was similar to Norton Road.
Thus far the scheme is showing signs of success with a higher standard of reading and writing early in Year One, for example, than previously seen prior to the introduction of the scheme.
All of our teachers have received at least two days of training on the programme and are confident in delivering it, especially staff in lower school who now use it all the while.
