Dear Parents,
Please find attached two weeks worth of activities for your child to complete where possible. Try to use TT Rockstars, Doodle maths and Bugclub. As well as this, please ensure your child is practising their sounds and key words regularly.
Below is a timetable with given learning objectives. These activities have been selected to support your child with the Year 1 curriculum.
For English and Maths, please find the PowerPoints created to explain tasks for you and your child. There may be worksheets linked to the Learning Objective (LO) or your child may be asked to create their own work. The activities set are focussed on Year 1 objectives.
For Phonics, we use a scheme called Read Write Inc. To know how to pronounce the sounds please watch the videos provided by Ruth Miskin https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCo7fbLgY2oA_cFCIg9GdxtQ
Please practise your child’s spellings with them each day. The spellings are based on the phonics groups. Please check a previous spelling sheet to see which group your child is in.

Welcome to Year 1
September 2020
Dear Parents/Carers,
It is lovely to see so many smiling faces as the children come into school each day. The children all look so smart in their school uniforms. Thank you for your support with this and for taking the time to label all items of your child’s school uniform. May we take this opportunity to remind you, if you have not already done so, that it is essential to: Name all clothing, shoes, coats and P.E kits! It really does help things to be returned to the correct owner.
We would like to introduce the staff your children will be working with in Year 1 and also give you an outline of the term ahead. The teachers are Miss Ellis, Miss Filmer and Mrs Hussain. We also have Ms Pearce and Miss Sirc supporting the teaching and learning across the year group.
Children arrive in class and begin the day with ‘early morning work’ related to something he/she has learnt or will be learning. At home time, your child can be picked up from their classroom door on the playground. We ask parents to make a socially distanced queue outside the classroom at home time to help us dismiss the children safely.
PE kits: This includes a white T-shirt, black shorts, tracksuit bottoms and black trainers. Children need to come to school in their PE kit on their PE days. These are Tuesday and Thursday for Year 1. For further details, please see class notices on external doors. For health and safety reasons, it is essential earrings are not worn on PE days.
Weekly homework tasks: Homework will be sent out on a Friday and will not need to be returned. The homework tasks will be discussed during the week to assess how the children have got on. We value the support you give with the activities; however, we do ask that the work is your child’s own.
Reading Books: Reading books will not be going home at the moment. However, sharing a book with your child is a valuable experience. Please make sure you are regularly logging on to Bug Club and reading the selection of books with your child. A “little and often approach” is usually the most effective, so we suggest 10 minutes a day where you share a book with your son/daughter and enjoy the experience together.
Spellings: Your child will be given words to learn to read and spell. These words may be the Reception or Year 1/2 keywords or words related to their phonics. Spellings will be provided on a Wednesday and tested on the following Wednesday. Please practise the spellings daily on the sheet provided, you do not need to return the completed sheet to school.
Water Bottles: In order to aid concentration, we encourage children to bring in a small water bottle. Please ensure your child’s bottle is named. The bottle may be refilled during break times with cool, fresh water. Bottles need to be taken home daily to be washed and refilled with fresh water.
Please find below an overview of the curriculum for the term ahead: -
English: In English lessons we will continue with the work carried out in Reception with ‘Read, Write Inc.’ Read, Write Inc aims to provide a programme of activities that will get children learning to read and write quickly and easily. The programme consists of rigorous daily phonics practise, combined with reading and writing activities to support the sounds that they are focussing on that week. Alongside this, we will be covering a range of genres such as: poetry, traditional tales and letters.
Maths: In Maths, your child will have the opportunity to secure their knowledge and understanding of numbers and place value. We will then move onto addition and subtraction using different methods and resources to support your child. The children will also use practical resources to explore money, measurements and shape.
Science: Within the first half term our topic is ‘Ourselves’. We will be focusing on the main body parts, our senses and life cycles. The second topic is ‘Everyday materials’. We will be looking at the properties of materials, focusing on how and why they are used.
Topic: During the Autumn Term, Year One will be following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on significant events. The theme is Time Travellers.
We will be:
• Learning how to create a timeline
• Finding out about events that are important to us in our local area and other countries
• Using objects to find out more about an event
• Using different sources to learn about a national event
Computing: In computing, we will be looking at E-safety and how to stay safe on the internet. We will also be exploring how to create documents and edit them. Later on in the term, we will be learning how to make things move using coding.
PSHE&C: Children will explore the feelings and emotions of ‘New Beginnings’. We will also focus on the importance of growth mindset.
All of the work we are going to do has been written to help your child reach the learning goals. Children will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating, and working on their own and in groups. We look forward to sharing our work with you.
We value the partnership between home and school and would like to remind parents that if ever you have any concerns or information you would like to discuss with us, please telephone the school to arrange an appointment to discuss the matter further.
We are all looking forward to the term ahead and hope that your children will very much enjoy their experiences in Year 1.
Yours sincerely,
Dear Bears and Hedgehogs,
We hope you are all well and staying safe. All of the Year 1 staff are missing you and can not wait to see you when we are all back in September.
Have you learnt anything new or enjoyed doing something different during your time at home? Here are some things that we have been getting up to in between doing school work:
Miss Ellis has made friends with a very cute cat, who visits her almost every day.
Miss Filmer has read a HUGE total of 17 books.
Mrs Begum has enjoyed going for walks with her daughter and working in her garden.
Mrs Bumpus has been busy in her garden.
Miss Jaber has been baking lots of tasty desserts for her family.
Mrs Khan learnt how to cut her daughters hair.
Miss Owen has been keeping healthy by exercising in her local park.
Ms Pearce has been painting pebbles and creating a lighthouse out of flower pots.
Miss Sirc has been busy gardening and still has a lot to do.
Send a letter to tell us about everything you have done while staying safe at home. We have really missed talking to you.
As we come to the end of Year 1, we just want you to know how proud we are of you all. It has been a strange year, but you have all been amazing and worked so hard. This year has included lots of fun things such as: our wow morning, the nativity, growing beans, learning about the past, sponsored skip and so much more. You created amazing posters about: road safety, e-safety, litter and an election poster for your class candidate for Prime Minister. We loved seeing your outstanding Learning Logs each week including: interactive games, miniature gardens, rockets and your hard work and progression in Maths and English.
Even though in September you will be in Year 2, you will still be our Bears and Hedgehogs that we love and care for. You will still be able to come and see us and say hello.
Please remember to keep active, read lots and stay safe.
We have loved this year and we will miss you all very much.
Love from
Miss Ellis, Miss Filmer and all the staff in Year 1
Dear Parents/Carers,
We hope that you are all well and safe. As we continue our home learning journey, we again thank you for your support. Like we have said previously, keeping up with some school work is really important to maintain what your child has been learning this year. A few hours a day is more than enough. This current situation will affect all families differently, so please do what is best for you and your child.
We have again provided a suggested timetable. English and Maths are in a word document, this document has details about resources and tasks for each lesson.

Children need to continue to come to school in their PE kits on Tuesday and Thursdays. This includes a white polo shirt, black shorts/dark tracksuit bottoms and black trainers. Earrings need to be removed on the days your child has PE for health and safety reasons. Please make sure your child has a water bottle in school with his/her name on. This is important as the weather gets warmer and children need to keep hydrated.
Thank you very much for your continued support.

Dear Parents,
First of all we would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and welcome you back to a new school term.
We have an exciting term ahead and value your support with your child’s learning. We would like to share with you some of the areas which will be covered this term. We hope that this will help you be more informed. If you have any questions about areas of the curriculum please arrange to speak to your child’s class teacher who will be happy to discuss it with you.
We will be continuing our Phonics lessons using The Read Write Inc. programme and using Hamilton for our English and Maths lessons. Children will develop their knowledge and understanding of mathematics through practical activities, exploration and discussion.
In RE we will be focusing on the Christian faith but we will also be building upon pupils’ own beliefs and practices. We hope to have a visit from a member of the church. As part of our topic we will be looking at different places and cultures around the world.
PSHE and C will continue with Going for Goals and ways to keep ourselves healthy! This valuable time enables children to express their thoughts, feelings and views in a safe and comfortable environment, thus helping them to become confident individuals.
During our PE lessons, we will be focusing on skills in Gymnastics and Games.
Music will be taught following The Music Express programme, where pupils have a chance to use instruments, sing and compose performances.

September 2018
Dear Parents/Carers,
It is lovely to see so many smiling faces as the children come into school each day. The children all look so smart in their school uniforms. Thank you for your support with this and for taking the time to label all items of your child’s school uniform. May we take this opportunity to remind you, if you have not already done so, that it is essential to: Name all clothing, shoes, coats and P.E kits! It really does help things to be returned to the correct owner.
We would like to introduce the staff your children will be working with in Year 1 and also give you an outline of the term ahead. In Year 1 we have 2 classes: Hedgehog Class (Miss Ellis with Mrs Bumpus and Mrs Savu) and Bear Class (Mrs Rowlands/Mrs Hussain). The Teaching Assistant in Year 1 is Miss Sirc.
The times of the school day in Year 1 are different to Foundation. In Year 1 the day starts at 8.40am. Children arrive in class and begin the day with “early morning work” related to something he/she has learned the previous day. The day finishes at 3.20pm and your child can be picked up from their classroom door on the playground. We ask parents to make a queue outside the classroom at home time to help us dismiss the children safely.
PE kits- This includes a white T-shirt, black shorts, tracksuit bottoms and black trainers. Children need to come to school in their PE kit on their PE days. These are Tuesday and Thursday for Year 1. It is essential earrings are not worn on PE days.
Learning Logs Learning Logs will be sent out on a Friday and will need to be returned on the following Wednesday. We value the support you give with the activities; however we do ask that the work is your child’s own. Please do comment on how your child found the activity, as it is helpful to know if they found it difficult etc.
Reading Books Sharing a book with your child is a valuable experience. Your son/daughter will be provided with a reading book and Reading Diary for you to sign and comment in. We do ask that you support your child with reading as often as possible. Your child will then have the opportunity to change his/her book as often as possible. We will soon be setting children up with Bug Club subscriptions so they can access extra books online to read at home.
Spellings In addition to your child bringing a reading book home, he/she will also be given words to learn to read and spell. These words may be the Reception or Year 1/2 keywords or words related to their phonics. Spellings will be provided on a Wednesday and tested on the following Wednesday.
Water Bottles In order to aid concentration and minimise disruption to lessons with visits to the water fountain, we encourage children to bring in a small water bottle. Please ensure your child’s bottle is named. The bottle may be refilled during break times with cool fresh water. We do ask that bottles are taken home daily to be washed and refilled with fresh water.
Please find below an overview of the curriculum for the term ahead:-
English
In English lessons we will continue with the work carried out in Reception with ‘Read, Write Inc.’ Read, Write Inc aims to provide a programme of activities that will get children learning to read and write quickly and easily. The programme consists of rigorous daily phonics practise, combined with reading and writing activities to support the sounds that they are focussing on that week. It covers a wide range of genres including fiction and non-fiction materials, such as stories, plays, poems and non-fiction texts, which will also be linked to our topic work.
Maths
The children will be working in classes for Maths to enable us to focus on their individual needs using the Power Maths Scheme. The teaching assistants will support the children who need extra intervention with their Maths skills. The children will be developing their skills within counting, properties of number, shape space and measure. They will be applying these skills and developing their problem solving skills across all areas.
Topic
Please find further details below of the two units that we will be focusing on for topic work. As we start a new unit, we will be providing you with the details and will also ask for your support too. There are times when children will need to bring things in from home or carry out research with your help. We hope you will enjoy being a part of this exciting term.
PSHE & C will be taught each week to develop children’s personal, social and emotional skills. Children will also be taking part in RE, Music and PE lessons alongside this.
TOPICS
The topic theme is Time Travellers.
In History we will be:
• Learning how to create a timeline
• Finding out about events that are important to us
• Using objects to find out more about an event
