Dear Parents

Welcome back! It is great to see all of the smiling faces around school once again and despite being far from ‘normal’ can we just say how well the children of year 3 have settled in and how hard they are working already.

Physical Education and Games

P.E days for year 3 will be on Tuesday mornings. In the future this will increase to another session, when time and space allow.  Children will need to come into school in their PE kits. As they are coming into school in their PE kit, please ensure that they wear their tracksuit trousers over their shorts. Please can we remind you that for indoor PE, the children need black shorts and a plain white t-shirt. In the colder weather, dark coloured plain tracksuits/jogging bottoms are suitable for outdoor games and appropriate footwear is essential. Please make sure that children do not wear jewellery to school and that earrings are removed. Long hair should also be tied back on these days.

Reading and Library

As a school, we are continuing to have a focus on reading. However due to needing to maintain hygiene and limiting the spread of potential germs and viruses, we will not be sending reading books home to read.  Our online reading system ‘Bug Club’ will be back up and running shortly, where your child will be allocated books to read. Stay tuned!

Learning logs and homework

Learning logs will not be sent home for the same reasons as reading books.  However other homework will be supplied.  We must insist that all homework that is sent home, stays at home and is not brought back into school.  Thank you for your support with this.

Spellings will be set on a Friday to be returned and tested the following Friday. As well as practising each spelling on a daily basis, children will need to write sentences to demonstrate their understanding of each word.  This can be done on the back of the spelling sheet.

Times Tables are vital for fluency with number in mathematics and these will also be set on a Friday, to be learnt and tested the following Friday. All children will take part in the school’s 60/100 club, where children demonstrate their knowledge of times tables facts by answering a series of either 60 or 100 questions in a given time. Over the course of a number of weeks, as they improve, they receive recognition by receiving different badges. The whole of Key Stage 2 takes part in this activity.

Snacks

Children in year 3 have the option of bringing in a snack for a mid-morning ‘pit stop’. During this time we encourage children to eat fruit or vegetables whilst having the opportunity to watch BBC Newsround.  Please only allow your children to bring in fruit or vegetables.  No biscuit/cereal/cheese based snacks will be allowed.  This is partially due to allergies and other factors.  Thank you.  

School visits

At the present time, no school trips have been arranged.  Should this change in the future, then you will be notified as soon as possible.

Year 3

Summer Term Information

Dear Parents,

ppresentation, writing composition (planning, drafting, writing, evaluating, editing) and vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. We will continue to practise joined handwriting as it is an expectation that all children will be able to do this.

In the first half of term, we will be reading The Firework Maker’s Daughter and working on persuasive writing and play scripts.  In the second half of term, we will focus on The Vanishing Rainforest and using this to write character and setting descriptions and our very own story about how the destruction of the rainforest affects those living there. We will also be writing poems about this majestic place. This will be complemented by our grammar work on apostrophes, present perfect tense and inverted commas.  

The aim for Mathematics in the 2014 National Curriculum is to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, begin to reason mathematically and finally, use their skills to solve mathematical problems. Within the mathematics of Year 3, lessons include the following strands of the National Curriculum:

• Number and place value
• Addition and subtraction
• Multiplication and division
• Fractions
• Measurement including time and mass
• Geometry: properties of shapes
• Geometry: position and direction
• Statistics
  Multiplication tables continue to be a vital focus for the children and they need to be practising these regularly.

In Computing, the children will be continuing to develop the skills they have learned whilst investigating new software, ideas and ways of working.  We shall be undertaking a series of lessons aimed at developing the use of Google Classroom and its powerful tools.  The children will be working collaboratively both in and out of school.

Our first topic for Science this term we will be investigating animals and animal life cycles. 

Music will continue to be taught by Mr Cowburn, a Luton Council music consultant and professional percussionist. In these weekly 45 minute sessions, the children will continue to learn drumming, with a focus on combining the various instruments they have played so far this year into ensembles, and will be beginning to learn how music is written.

RE will be taught by Ms K Phillips, on a Monday and Thursday in both classes. This term will focus on how people worship. Our PHSE lessons will focus on going for goals and how children can develop their own growth mind-set. This gives an important opportunity for all children’s abilities, qualities and strengths to be valued.

PE lessons will be on Tuesday mornings. This term will focus on tennis and athletics along with our Skip2bfit challenge.  At this time of year, the children should bring a PE jumper and tracksuit trousers due to the varied weather.  Water bottles are also important and should be labelled with your child’s name.

Homework will be sent home on a Friday and will be due in on the Wednesday of the following week. It will consist of spellings for which the children are also expected to write the given words in sentences to show an understanding of the meaning of the word. These are tested on a Friday morning. It will also include a piece of mathematics, which will usually be linked to our learning for that or the previous week, and a piece of topic based and English work.

Our library is open and offers the children a good selection of different styles of books and authors to choose from. Please bring books into school on Wednesdays to be changed. Reading books, on the other hand, can be changed any day and should be brought into school at least 3 times per week to be checked. Daily reading makes a huge difference to how well our children progress so your support with this is much appreciated.

It is important that your child has access to water throughout the day – please could you ensure that your child brings a clear water bottle with a sealable sports top, each day.
