Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you have had an enjoyable holiday. There will be a year 6 meeting for parents in the next few weeks where we will share the new expectations and the new tests. Once the date has been confirmed we will let you know. We hope you will be able to join us for the meeting as it will help you when supporting your child at home.

 

This term the children will be learning the following:

English

Genres: Diary, poetry, non-chronological report, letter.

Use of subordinate clauses, apostrophes for possession and omission

Use of past tense- changing  from past to present

Improving vocabulary and comprehension skills

Mathematics

Place value up to 100,000: partitioning and stating the value of a digit in a number. Ordering numbers.

Multiples of 10, 100, 10,000, 100,000

Times tables – up to 12 x 12

Place value of numbers with decimals- up to 3 decimal places

Rounding numbers to nearest 10, 100, 1000, whole number, 1 decimal place

Adding money using column method.

Converting measures of length  and using them to solve problems

Sorting and learning the properties of shapes including circles and quadrilaterals.

Angles around a point, finding missing angles

Finding common multiples and factors. Identify the prime numbers

Compare and order fractions

Time- 24hr clock and reading and using timetables.

Written methods for all calculations using the methods the government wants the children to use.

Computing

To use the internet to research about evolution, Charles Darwin, fossils and adaptation.

E-safety- how to be safe on the internet.

The history of computers and computing.

Coding using espresso

Science

To know how fossils are formed and how they can be used to find out about animals and plants that lived millions of years ago.

To know what inheritance is and look at the similarities and differences between themselves and their parents.

To find out the differences in lifecycles of a mammal, insect and a bird.

To use classification keys to sort animals

To understand how animals have adapted to their environment

Microorganisms- to know the conditions they like to grow and know their benefits and how they can be harmful.

Human body- the location and purpose of the major organs in the body.

History

Looking at secondary sources to find out about the past.

To know about the life of Charles Darwin and his effect on History and Science.

Art and design

Sketching skills. Drawing faces and looking at the work of Andy Warhol.

Drawing the human body in different sports.- painting

Looking at artists interpretations of sports.

Music

Listening to the structure of music. Singing songs from a historical background e.g. WW1.

Invasion games and target sports.

Homework:  Please support your child with their homework and check that it is completed and returned to school, when required, as this will help the children practise and reinforce the learning they have been doing in school.

 It is important that your child reads whenever possible; please ask them questions about the book or text they are reading. Each child will be issued with a reading record where you can record when you hear them read. The children should be reading at least 4 times a week.  This will be checked every Friday and rewards will be given to those who read frequently and complete their record with vocabulary they have identified as being interesting or new to them. You can also support your child by learning their spellings, the times tables and other Maths facts.

 

Please ensure that PE kits are worn to school, instead of school uniform, on Mondays and Fridays. Where possible we will do PE outside so please ensure the children have the appropriate clothing especially at this time of the year.  (Black jogging bottoms or tracksuit, a warm top and outdoor trainers)

The PE kit should be a white t- shirt and black shorts or jogging bottoms.  The children will need outdoor plimsolls or trainers.

We would be grateful if you could label your child’s uniform and PE kit with their name.

 

We would also be grateful if your child has a pencil case with a blue pen, pencil, rubber and sharpener and colouring pencils if they choose.  Felt tips and rulers will be provided by the school.

 

A water bottle is essential to ensure your child is well hydrated during lessons and PE.

Dear Parents and Carers,

 We hope you had an enjoyable holiday. This term we will be continuing our preparation for the SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests) which are very quickly approaching.

This term is an extremely busy one for year 6. There are numerous events during the term including visits to high schools, visits by high school staff to meet with year 6 teachers and the pupils, and hopefully an end of term production. There is also a trip organised for later in the term.

Homework:  Please support your child with their homework and check that it is completed and returned to school when required, as this will help the children practise and reinforce the learning they have been doing in school. It is important that your child reads whenever possible and if you have time, please ask your child questions about the book or text they are reading. Also, learning spellings that are given, times tables and maths facts can be supported at home.

Please ensure that PE kits are worn to school on Monday and Friday. Where possible, we will do PE outside so please ensure the children have the appropriate clothing. Also, a water bottle is essential especially as the weather gets warmer.

Please ensure children are using the active learn online resources if you have internet access as there are many books and maths activities for the children to use which will help them with their work. If your child does not have their password, please ask your child’s teacher. If your child has completed the activities given to them, let teachers know as more can be allocated.

Snacks: The children are able to have a small snack during the morning lessons. We would be grateful if the snack is a healthy one. For example: fruit or yoghurt.

The curriculum:

During the first half of this term, the lessons will mainly include revision in Maths, Comprehension and Grammar.

Be able to use and interpret globes and maps.

To use 4 and 6 figure grid references.

To know where the ancient Mayan civilisation was.

Art and design

Working with different mediums (pencil. Colouring pencils, pastels paints) to create art work.

Work based on the art by Henri Rousseau.

Masks- Mayan masks.

On this website there are maths and reading activities set up for your child to access at home or a local library. Children should be using this resource regularly as part of their homework.

This term we will be working on the topic of tourism and holidays while also continuing to develop skills and knowledge in other subject areas. Below is a table showing what we will be covering with the children.
