Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 5! We are so pleased to have all of the children back in school and have enjoyed the past couple of weeks of getting to know them.  As you are aware, school is very different to what the children have been used to before, with lots of restrictions and new routines to get used to. We have to say that they are doing an amazing job adjusting to this new way of working and we are very proud of how sensible they have been.

Within this curriculum letter, you will find an overview of the topics that we will be covering in our learning this term as well as some important information regarding what is happening at school. We hope that you find this informative.

Physical Education and Games

In Year 5, our P.E days are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Each class will have its own PE day but we would like all children to wear PE kit on both of these days.  For now, as Wednesday is wash day Wednesday, we would request that, although children do not need to wear their school PE kit on this day, they do need to wear something that is suitable and safe to take part in PE lessons, including trainers.

Swimming

Norton Road pupil’s swimming journey continues into year 5, however due to current restrictions and to keep your child safe, we will not be starting these lessons at the moment. Should the situation change, we will be in touch to confirm the details.

Reading and Library

Reading is very important and a key focus of both Year 5 and the school.  All children have been allocated a school reading book which they keep on their desk, in their individual packs.  Time is given to the children to read these books and we will, of course, try to hear them read as much as we can. While reading books remain at school, the children will be recording, in their reading records, the books that they have read and enjoyed, along with a short review. Additionally, they have access to the range of books in our class library, so they can also read for pleasure.  We will be allocating books on bug club, which can be accessed anytime at home using the username and password that has been sent home.

Learning logs and homework

At the moment, learning logs will not be sent home for children to complete their homework in. Homework set will be a combination of online activities and skills to practise at home. Online maths and reading activities will be set every other week, with paper-based tasks sent home in between.  This may include research activities, handwriting practise or times tables practise, among other things. Please DO NOT return any paper-based activities to school.  We will monitor their impact through other methods such as, feedback in lessons, information gathered used in their work, improvement in handwriting and development in knowledge or spellings of times tables.

Spellings

To complete their work in spellings from last year, we have already sent home the year 3/ 4 spelling words for your child to keep and practise. We will be testing these words over the coming days and weeks. Moving forward, as we introduce new spelling patterns and the year 5/6 words, spelling sheets will be sent home on their spelling day, 5LB on Mondays and 5SM on Wednesdays, with the week’s words on for your child to practise at home. These new words will be tested in our weekly spelling test. Again, we ask that you don’t return these to school but still practise daily.

Snacks

As in all key stage 2 classes, children will have the opportunity to have a healthy morning snack. As a school, we endeavour to promote healthy lifestyles, so we ask that children bring in a piece of fresh fruit, vegetables, some dried fruit or a cereal bar as their snack choice. Please do not include chocolate, cakes or other sugary snacks.

Dear Children,

Lockdown and school closures was something that none of us ever expected when we started our year together back in September. We would like to start by saying to say how proud we all are of each and every one of you for your hard work, determination and resilience this year. At times it hasn’t been easy and the past few months have been the trickiest yet, for all of us.  I’m sure that at times you may have felt frustrated or even sad at these changes, we all have. It is important to remember that you’re not alone and that you can express these feelings whether it is talking about them or even writing them down, and what you are feeling is perfectly normal.

The year 5 team are all back at school now and we have to say that it is very strange and empty being in the classrooms without you.  We miss you all and we miss having you here and seeing you every day but we know that, at this time, it is safest for you be at home. By staying home and staying safe, hopefully we can get back to some normality sooner.

Our year has sadly ended much sooner than any of us expected and we are very sad about that. When you return to school, you will be in year 6. We will not be your teachers any more, but we will always be available to listen if you need us or even if you just want to chat or catch up. 

We really hope that you have enjoyed your time at home with your families and have had time to complete some of the activities that we put on the school website or maybe even have learned a new skill.  As well as our own school work and coming back into school, the year 5 team have also made the most of our time at home with our families. During the lockdown, Mrs Billington took up running again and manged a personal best as well as spending time teaching her own children. Miss Miah enjoyed baking lots of goodies for her family and friends while Mrs Maroof showed great patience in teaching her sons how to ride their bikes.  Mrs Sygrove enjoyed spending some quality family time and going on long walks.

As the weather has been so kind to us, we hope that you have been able to get outside and keep active.  Exercising and keeping fit is a great way of boosting your mood; increasing positivity and making you feel good. There are lots of physical activities on the school website if you are stuck for ideas. The year 5 team have also enjoyed exploring our local areas. Luton has quite a few hidden gems to discover. Have you found anywhere new that you didn’t know was there before?

It has been really exciting for us to already have been sent lots of great art work and to have received letters from some of you.  It has given us a real boost to hear from you.

We would really love to hear from you in some way.  You could draw us a picture, like some of the lovely ones that have been sent in already, write us a letter or even send us photographs of things or activities that you have been enjoying while at home.

You are now a part of world history, this is a unique time; a time like this has never been seen before and in the future, children will learn about the Global Covid-19 pandemic of 2020. If you have been keeping a diary of this time, you may enjoy writing a letter to your future self, reminding you of what this time was like, or even create a scrap book that your future generations can look back on. However, this has been for you, this is something that is now part of your own, your families and World history.

We miss you all and send our best wishes to all of you and your families.

Year 5- Home Learning

Dear Year 5,

We have come to the final work pack of the year. Sadly, we won’t get to see you now before we finish the academic year and we would just like to say that although it has not been the year that we had expected, we are proud of all of you. We want to thank you for being you, for making us laugh and reminding us why we love our job.  It might seem a little bit scary, the thought of coming back and being in Year 6 but whoever your teachers are, they will be there to help support your return and we are always here for you if you need us.  We are looking forward to seeing you all when you return and wish you all the best a you move forward.

In this pack, we have set work in English and maths as usual and we have continued to give you some activities related to space. There are lots of art-based work as we would have been doing this is school.  Please complete what you can with the resources that you have at home.  If you don’t have the resources that you needs, try your best with what you have or be creative and create something different. We have also included some activities to help you think about returning to school in Year 6 and some activities set by Luton Town Football Club and Premier League Primary Stars which link PE and values. We have also added some fun activities to do outdoors with your family and friends.

Each subject and topic pack has an information sheet, which tells you what you need to know for the activities and sheets included withing the pack. This is where you will find the more practical and research-based activities. 

If you don’t have access to a printer, you can use the information on the screen and write the answers on paper or in a notebook.

We have given you lots of activities in these packs, to allow you and your child to have plenty of choices. There are no expectations for you to complete all of the work set. Just do a much as you are able to do in a way which works for you and your child.

Finally, don’t forget to have fun together. Get creative! We would love to see all of the arts and crafts that your children have made when we return back to school.

Year 5- Home Learning

Dear Year 5,

As schools are reopening for some children, I have to say that it is very strange for Miss Miah and I to be here without you all.  The classrooms just aren’t the same without all of the hustle and bustle, the sound of your voices and the sight of your faces looking back at us eager to learn.  We are all doing our best with all of the changes and restrictions that are happening and at times it can be difficult and confusing.  We are all trying our best to adapt and understand all of the new rules.  Please remember that we are all feeling this way at some point so please talk about how you are feeling, speak to an adult, a sibling, a  cousin, a friend; any one that you feel comfortable with.  We are missing you all and thinking of you all. Look after yourselves and keep smiling. 

We had continued to add tour work pack. Alongside the English and maths work, we have started to give you some activities related to space. We have been saving this topic as we were really hoping to be able to teach you this ourselves. However, with only a few weeks left of year 5, we would hate for you to miss out as we know that a lot of you were looking forward to this topic. Homework

Please support your child with their homework and check that it is completed and returned to school, when required, as this will help the children practise and reinforce the learning they have been doing in school.

Below is a timetable of the homework that will be set and when it is expected to be returned to school.

When the spellings are given out to the children, they should use these words in sentences to show they understand the meaning. 

You can also support your child by helping them learn their times tables and other maths facts.

Reading

We are pleased at the increasing number of children who are reading at least three times per week. It is vital that your child reads whenever possible and if you have time, please ask your child questions about the book or text they are reading to help develop their comprehension and vocabulary. Your child should be reading at least 3 times a week, but the more, the better and each time a child reads it should be recorded in their reading record (not when the book is completed).

Making my Footprint

The children have really enjoyed their first half term taking part in Making my Footprint. They have taken part in team building activities and are currently in the middle of their basic first aid training, which will be completed over the next few weeks. We are looking forward to the term ahead. 5LB will be taking part in the Friday session up until half term, while 5SM complete their first training on Monday afternoons for the next couple of weeks. After half term, 5SM will continue with their sessions on Friday mornings.

Times Tables Rock stars

All children in Year 5 have been given a user name and password for the Times Tables Rock stars website.  Over the Christmas break they should have logged on, chosen their rock star name and completed the initial ‘sound check’. This first activity determines what each child will need to practise.  Although TT Rock stars will not be set as a weekly homework we would like to encourage children to use this a often as possible to improve their times tables knowledge.

Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful summer holiday and that the children have already begun to tell you some of the great things we have planned to do this term.  We are looking forward to continuing to work with your children this year.

Within this curriculum letter, you will find an overview of the topics that we will be covering in our learning this term. We hope that you find this informative.

Physical Education and Games

In Year 5, our P.E days are on Monday and Friday. Mondays will be indoor or outdoor P.E lessons taught in school, by your child’s class teacher. Fridays will be either swimming or an indoor or an outdoor PE lesson.  As trialled at the end of last year, each class will swim in blocked sessions that will last for approximately a half term. 

For the first half term, 5SM will go swimming, followed by 5LB after the half term break. We will be sending out a separate letter to confirm the dates for these sessions.

For both days the children will need to attend school wearing their PE kits.  Please remember that PE kit should consist of plain black jogging bottoms, leggings or shorts, plain white crew neck t-shirt, black or white trainers and a school jumper, fleece or hooded sweatshirt (available to order from the school office). Please make sure that children do not wear jewellery to school, earrings are removed and long hair is tied back on these days.

Reading and Library

In Year 5, we are continuing our focus on reading. Children are expected to read with an adult for around 10 minutes at least 3 times a week. This needs to be evidenced in their reading records with a comment from you. You do not need to wait until a book has been finished before you write a comment. Please comment every time you hear your child read, however many pages this may be, so we can keep a record of how often your child is reading. We expect children to have their reading book in school every day.

As an incentive to encourage as much reading as possible at home, we will be rewarding those children who read every day. The children who have read every day will receive a small prize at the end of the week and the child or children who have read the most over each half term will be rewarded with a book.

Learning logs will be sent out on Friday and will need to be returned by the following Wednesday.  There will be one objective based on the topic that children have been learning that week. However, as part of the task, there will be an English focus.

Maths homework will reinforce work which the children have been working on that particular week. It is important that children practise their times tables as an ongoing task. This is an important skill they need to have as so much of their mathematical learning is based upon these. This will also be set on a Friday and will need to be returned the following Wednesday.

Spellings will be set on a Friday to be returned and tested the following Friday. As well as practising each spelling on a daily basis, children will need to write sentences to demonstrate their understanding of each word.

All of the tasks set are very important in bridging relationships between home and school. They are designed to build on the skills and knowledge that they have been developing not only throughout each week but throughout the school year. If you have any questions please speak to your child’s class teacher.

This term we have decided to hold a challenge for all the Year 5 children.   This challenge will be to read at least 5 times a week (for about 10 mins each time although they can read for longer). If they have, they will receive a sticker on the class chart.  At the end of each half term, the children who have read the most will receive a treat or prize.

Walking Home

When children enter Year 5, many parents decide to allow their child to walk home by themselves. If you wish to do so, please inform your child’s class teacher in writing. If we do not receive permission in writing, we will not allow your child to leave the school premises without an appropriate adult.

Physical Education and Games

In year 5, our PE day is on Monday and the children will need to come to school in their appropriate PE kits and will stay in their kit for the day. For indoor PE, the children need black shorts and a plain white t shirt. In the colder weather, dark coloured plain tracksuits/jogging bottoms are suitable for outdoor games and appropriate footwear is essential. These can be worn over the top of their shorts on the way to school when the children are having indoor PE.

On alternative Fridays, the children will participate in swimming sessions. The children will need to ensure they have a towel and a suitable swimming costume on the day they go swimming. It is also requested that girls wear a swimming cap. Please also note that if a boy wears long ‘Bermuda’ style baggy shorts the swimming teachers will not allow them to take part due to health and safety so it is suggested that boys wear swimming trunks.

Please make sure that children do not wear jewellery to school, earrings are removed and long hair is tied back on these days.

Year 5 is having a big focus on reading this term. Children are expected to read with an adult for 15 minutes at least 4 times a week. This needs to be evidenced in their reading records with a comment from you. You do not need to wait until a book has been finished before you write a comment. Please comment every time you hear your child read, however many pages this may be, so we can keep a record of how often your child is reading. We expect children to have their reading book in school every day. In addition to a reading book, children will have the opportunity to visit the school library once a week to select a book of their own choice. We would like to remind you a fee will need to be paid to replace any lost books.

Your child will also have a Bug Club password and have books allocated for them to read.

School Visits

During this term we will be visiting Dell Farm to take part in a fun and engaging day based on our topic of Anglo-Saxons and there is also a trip to see a pantomime during December. More information about these visits will be sent out to you in due course.

Medical

If your child requires an inhaler, insulin or an Epipen please could you ensure that these are in school and are in date. If your child has any new medical conditions (including allergies) then please contact the school office to inform them of any treatment or medicine that is required.

Prince William Award

The year group will continue to take part in this exciting award on alternate Fridays. On this day they will be required to wear their Prince William uniform which school will provide for them.

Year 5 Parent meeting

During this half term, we will be holding a meeting for parents with children in Year 5. During this meeting we will explain the expectations of the year 5 curriculum and ways that you can support your child at home. A date will be set soon and you will be notified shortly. We look forward to seeing you there.

Starting in Spring Term, Mr Cowburn will be returning to continue the fantastic music lessons that the children have had with him in previous years.

Schools Visits

Year 5 have a visit to Dell Farm in November to experience an Anglo-Saxon themed day, linking to our Autumn term topic.

In the Spring term, we learn all about space. We visit the National Space centre in Leicester to help consolidate learning and bring the topic to life. There will also be a residential visit to Dell Farm at some point this term.

In the Summer term, we return to Dell Farm, to complete scientific experiments linked to our science lessons and take part in outdoor adventurous activities.

Behaviour and expectations

In Year 5, we have high expectations of our children. We promote the school’s values and encourage children to think in a growth mind set.
